We have been lucky with mild weather this fall season so far; however, the air is cooler and drier and that brings problems for many people's skin. This is a time when moisturizing should be the primary focus of your skin care. I always tell my patients to keep things simple when considering skin care. Gentle cleansers and oil free moisturizer for the face are all you really need. I also like products such as Dove Soap, or brands such as CeraVe, Cetaphil, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Eucerin and LaRoche Posay to name a few. You do not need a lot of products to complicate your routine. There is information overload on social media, especially in places like TikTok and Instagram. Keep in mind many of these "influencers" have an agenda to push certain products and they often promote a multi-step routine which can be time consuming, financially draining, and not healthy for your skin. Young people in particular are vulnerable targets and do not need to be using all these "serums" and products they are being told to use. Keep it simple with a basic cleanser, gentle moisturizer and of course sunscreen.

May is Melanoma awareness month. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer and one that if not caught early can spread to other parts of the body. Like all cancers, early detection is the most important aspect of diagnosis and treatment. If you think something looks odd or out of place on your skin do not wait, get it checked out as soon as you can. This is a great time to think about your annual skin check too. Even if you have not noticed something looking different you should always have a properly trained clinician examine your skin. Schedule your skin exam now! And always wear sun protection. The higher the SPF the better.
